Enjoying the outdoors while taking in the panoramic views of Chilmark Pond and the Atlantic Ocean is the focus of this family vacation home. The design blends traditional “island” design motifs with a contemporary esthetic that feels neither historicist nor out of place. Wood siding and shingles, lead-coated copper and steel sunscreens form the simple palette of materials. Some elements—the master bedroom, guestrooms and garage—are separated from the family gathering areas to provide privacy and create a variety of exterior spaces. These exterior spaces (terraces, patios and screened porches) allow the owners to experience the natural setting in all kinds of climatic conditions. Traditional dryset granite site walls are used to organize the site.
